From the comfort of a Crystal Springs bed through large windows that welcome nature in or from the cosy nook of a private patio as the fire warms the space and crackles softly; regardless of how you watch the sun set at Crystal Springs,

The sun rose in the year 2022 and greeted us as its light slipped through our mystical forests – it was the dawn of a new day and new possibilities and a glimmer into our future of what 2022 would hold. And what a bountiful year it has been! We have had a front-row seat to seeing families draw closer to each other as their faces gleamed with joy when spending quality time together.

We have borne witness to their laughter and enthusiasm as it floated through the air like a sweet melody. The Crystal Springs experience unfolded right before our eyes with each new arrival and has brought us so much joy. We wanted to take a moment to share in these experiences with you so, before the sun sets and the year comes to a close, join us and reflect on the incredible moments of 2022.

Crystal Springs is home to over 30 mammal species who make up the incredible biome that we call home. These are just some of the locals that have been spotted in recent months.
Mini Golf, New Look

Caracals have a reddish or sand-coloured fur that helps them camouflage in the bushveld when they are hunting for prey. They are labelled as small cats but are the heaviest and fastest of them all. For this, they are very opportunistic hunters and prey on whatever they can find; from small animals, like mongoose, to those that are twice their size, such as buck. In fact, up until the 20th century, rulers in India used them to hunt small game.

Recreational Ablution Facility

Commonly referred to as Gemsbok by the South African population, this species' true English name is Oryx. They have very distinctive black (some brown) and white triangular markings on their faces. This feature, coupled with their majestic horns, makes them a sight that people cannot easily forget. Did you know? The markings can indicate whether a gemsbok belongs to the northern or southern populations. The black markings on the northern populations are thinner and darker in colour than those of the southern populations.

Bathroom Light Replacements
Small-Spotted Genet

This adorable animal is a close relative of the mongoose species. It has black spots on its body, making it look like a smaller, cuter version of a leopard. They are shy and secretive creatures and though they are not particularly known to pose a threat to humans, they are predators, and their retractable claws make them excellent hunters. Their diet consists of birds, fish, lizards and rodents.

To change is to improve and, here at Crystal Springs, we are always making small changes to improve the Resort and ensure that your home-away-from-home is always better than when you left it. Here are some of the changes that we have been working on in the past six months:

A new irrigation system was installed at the beginning of September and our Gardening Team has begun the process of updating the gardens with indigenous species. We have also started our own composting process to support these new gardens. Keep an eye out to monitor our progress!

The cracks in the Reception and Restaurant building walls were fixed and repainted.

Herb Garden

A small herb garden has been established between Reception and the Restaurant. The Le Fera Team makes use of the herbs in their delicious dishes, and guests are welcome to pick some for their own use, too!

Clearing of debris

A Team was formed to clear out all the debris throughout the Resort. This included removing all dead tree branches and leaves, as well as future plans to clear the areas under the pine trees of debris and dead leaves, so that guests can use them for picnics and to take photographs.

Resort Entraince

The gardening store wall, adjacent to the main Resort entrance, was painted with blackboard chalk paint. Le Fera writes their daily specials here, so guests are always kept up-to-date with their tasty treats.

Resort Entrance

The Resort entrance has received some TLC recently. The stone wall has been cleared of overgrowth and the road leading to the Resort is scraped once a month to ensure that our guests have easy access to the premises.

Invasive Plants

We are in the process of removing invasive plants and trees on the Resort. This is a long-term project as we need to be careful not to harm any natural plants and trees, as well as ensure that we do not endanger any wildlife, such as squirrels and meerkats.

Resident Cat feeding programme

The feeding programme for our resident feral cats is ongoing and they are fed on a daily basis. A vet has been contacted to get all the cats spayed to prevent further breeding. This programme was launched at the end of October 2022 and will be monitored continually.

Unit Upgrades

We have completed the Chalet upgrades that we mentioned in the June newsletter. The new vinyl floors, dining room light, and painting in the Chalets’ interior have given the Chalets a new and modern look.

Multi Court

Our new Multi-Court was officially opened on 22 November 2022. To celebrate this opening, we had a Teambuilding day where the Houskeeping, Laundry, Gardening, Reception, and Le Fera Teams challenged each other to some sport on the Multi-Court. The Court is now available for guests’ use. Guests can enjoy a multitude of sports on the court, including basketball, badminton, in-line hockey, paddle tennis, shuffleboard, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.

Tennis Courts

The Tennis Courts are being resurfaced and will be available for guests to enjoy early in 2023.

Unit Patio upgrades

Selected Chalet Patios are being replaced and / or retreated.

Every year at Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge the Team gets creative with spoiling our guests and valued Shareholders. From daintily folded towels and refreshments on arrival, to celebrating those special occasions and holidays that we all treasure each year, here are the latest ways the Crystal Springs Team have been sprucing up holiday moments:

Father's Day

Father’s Day

Our Reception Team welcomed all our super dads with a gift on check-in day. Each dad received a 350ml bottle of Old Brown Sherry and an enamel cup that contained a thoughtful message.

On Father’s Day, the Le Fera Restaurant hosted a buffet lunch fit for kings which featured delicious starters, an assortment of meaty treats, salads, and decadent desserts!

Woman's Day

Woman’s Day

Our guests walked into a surprise at check-in on Women’s Day when each woman received a beautiful gerbera and a handmade canvas with newspaper that was painted with coffee.

Over at Le Fera Restaurant, our phenomenal women were treated to a high tea where they enjoyed many savoury treats and decadent sweet delights.

Heritage Day

Heritage Day

Heritage Day certainly lived up to the “braai day” name at the Resort this year. The celebrations began a day early when our guests were welcomed by our staff with fun and beautiful patterns painted on their faces. Several stalls lined the Reception entrance with authentic South African foods such as boerewors and koeksisters, and guests loved browsing the "local is lekker" isle. On Heritage Day all the guests visited the bar to watch the Springboks rugby match and our Team hosted a bring and braai for them afterward near the main swimming pool. We provided pap and sheba to accompany their braai goodies. It was cheers all around with many of our guests looking beautiful in their traditional garb.

The December Festive Season is always full of activities throughout the Resort.

We also have picnic baskets specially packed and prepared by the Kitchen chefs upon request.

We can go on and on about how well things have been going at the Resort, but the opinions that matter the most are of the people whom we work so diligently for. It makes our jobs even more worthwhile when our guests share all their holiday experiences with us and we know we are delivering on our intentions of creating an environment that fits their holiday needs. We will always be appreciative of every single compliment that we receive!

The game drive with Mr Mthombeni was exceptional! All staff members were very friendly and helpful; from the receptionist to housekeeping and the Mbali Spa employees.

Stayed here for two nights with my family and it was stunning. The Lodge we had overlooked the mountains and allowed for stargazing. We saw lots of animals including jackals and of course baboons, as well as zebra. There are lots for kids to do, too. For a breakaway, this place is just the ticket!

Beautiful location close to major attractions in the area. The view from the chalet is amazing, and we saw buck, wildebeest, and even jackal on a hike. There are lots of facilities for kids; the heated pools and Games Room were a hit. The Restaurant was basic but good.

Enjoyed our weekend getaway at Crystal Springs. The housekeeper attended to our needs. The Spa treatment was top-notch at Mbali with clean facilities. Warm pools were a big plus. Friendly staff all around the premise.

Robber’s Pass and Pilgrim’s Rest: A Blast From The Past!
There are a plethora of things that make Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge unique. One of them being the fact that we are situated in the historic town of Pilgrim’s Rest at the top of the equally historic road, Robber's Pass. The town and road are historically bound like a set of twins; their stories are those of a storybook.

In Closing

As the sun sets on the year 2022 and we take in the last of its beauty, we are reminded of what an exceptional year it has been. Each day offered us a new opportunity to create something special for every person that walked through our gates. We made it through another year of successfully creating an environment where people can come together to create memories that will forever be stored in the treasure chest of their hearts. An environment where all their senses come alive and their

souls are revitalised.

It brings great joy and warmth to our hearts to have lived and witnessed all of these moments and to share them with you, our valued Shareholders. Thank you for your continued support and faith in us throughout the year and as we say our final goodbyes for 2022, we hope that you are surrounded by love and warmth this Festive Season. We look forward to forging more unforgettable holiday memories with you in 2023.

Festive Season’s greetings,
