Monateng means “Place of Joy” in Sesotho and we strive to live up to our name with every passing moment. 2022 was no different; our year was filled with contagious cheer, ample wildlife sightings, and stunning bushveld sunsets. We have thoroughly enjoyed and cherished all the small, special moments that we have borne witness to throughout the course of 2022, just as much as the big celebrations.

Now the year is drawing to a close and, sitting here, on the viewing deck which overlooks the wildlife and nature, we reflect on all these moments, big and small. We ask that you, our valued Shareholders, join us as we ponder on the latest happenings at your home-away-from-home over the course of the last six months.

It is with saddened hearts that we inform you that the star of Monateng Safari Lodge, Jakes the Giraffe, passed away this year due to old age. Jakes was a treasure to not only the Monateng Safari Lodge family but to every guest that was lucky enough to have an encounter with him. His fiery, yet friendly, personality made him loved by many and he will truly be missed.

While we may have lost our dear Jakes the Giraffe, the Resort was soon thereafter blessed with the birth of two adorable giraffe calves who have come to mend the cracks in our hearts left by our loving Jakes. They have only been with us for a couple of months but have managed to settle in very well with the rest of the herd, often playing and getting up to mischief. It is safe to say that we are completely smitten with our giraffe herd’s new additions.

Keeping Monateng in tip-top shape is always at the top of our Team’s agenda so that you, our valued Shareholders, can have a comfortable and enjoyable stay every time you visit. Here are some of the projects that we have been working on:

New carpets were installed in select Chalets.

Three additional satellite stations have been built for our housekeepers.

Paving touch-ups were made at select Chalets to the main road (in progress).

Archery area created for the children (with two more sets in progress).

Replacement of wooden sliding doors and window frames with aluminium at select Chalets (in progress).

Creating Everlasting

At Monateng Safari Lodge we believe that every special occasion and holiday is worthy of a good celebration. Every year our Team comes up with creative ways to spoil our guests and give them an unmissable opportunity to forge incredible memories. Here are the latest of the good times that we have celebrated:

Father’s Day

To celebrate all the special men in our lives, our Team gifted all the fathers at check-in with delicious sweet and savoury snacks. Thereafter, once everyone had settled in, it was all fun and games when our Entertainment Team hosted a friendly beer pong competition. Each dad was required to throw a ball in a cup that had a name of a type of beer written on it. Those who successfully tossed the ball into a cup were the lucky winners of the beer that was labelled on the cup. It was a hoot of a time and by the end of the afternoon, many Monateng dads were enjoying ice-cold beers.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

We cannot create everlasting memories for our guests without celebrating all the special moments and milestones in their lives. Our most recent celebrations included Khanya’s 10th birthday and Mr and Mrs Nel’s honeymoon. Our Team made sure that Khanya’s birthday was one that she will never forget; with a beautiful balloon garland and “Khanya’s 10 BDay” written in nice, big letters on a white backdrop, as well as a table decorated to the nines with delicious treats for her and her friends to enjoy. The Nels arrived to a wonderful and romantic surprise when they got to their Chalet: a bottle of sparkling wine, a sweet, congratulatory note from the Team, and a heart made of flower petals.

John Henrico
Maintenance Manager

Started: November 2022

John previously worked in Tanzania for a group of Holiday Resorts as a Maintenance Manager and has since made his way to Monateng. It is a pleasure to welcome him to our family and we hope his time with us will bring him much happiness and fulfilment. Be sure to stop and say hello to him when next visiting Monateng!

Our Rangers and Entertainment Team put great effort into ensuring that all our guests have an unmatched experience when they visit the Resort. Make sure you try these awesome activities the next time you find yourself at Monateng!

The Monateng Safari Lodge experience is incomplete without a game drive. Get up-close-and-personal with the majestic animals of the bushveld. We offer a range of different game-drives, though please keep in mind that bookings are required in advance.

Our Entertainment Team schedules a Walking Trail on a weekly basis. The trail is guided, however, self-walks are permitted – just remember to wear comfortable hiking shoes, a hat, and some sunscreen. Find out more at Reception on arrival.

Our ever-so-popular Games Room offers a variety of games and a weekly movie night with free popcorn! Chat to Reception for more details.

Join the Entertainment Team outside the Games Room for a round of Archery. Guests are welcome to hire archery equipment for a refundable R100 deposit.
