Sudwala Rainforest |
|
The Sudwala Rainforest, also known as the Sudwala Caves Rainforest, is a natural attraction located close to the town of Nelspruit and is part of the larger Sudwala Caves complex. Even though it's not your typical tropical rainforest, the Sudwala Rainforest is a lush and green oasis with lots of plants and tall trees. It gets plenty of rain, which helps various plants like ferns, mosses, lichens, and other epiphytes grow there. The forest has a peaceful and calm atmosphere, making it a refreshing escape from the open grasslands around it. Visitors can explore the forest and enjoy its natural beauty through well-maintained walking trails. The diverse plant life in the forest attracts many different birds, butterflies, and small animals, creating a vibrant ecosystem.

Sudwala Caves |
The Sudwala caves are not only the oldest known caves in the world but they are also located in very old rocks called Pre-Cambrian dolomite. These rocks are some of the second oldest sedimentary rocks on Earth. Water gently flows down the cliff face and nourishes the forest. Inside the Sudwala cave system, there is a big circular chamber called the PR Owen hall, also known as the amphitheatre. This chamber is famous for its natural acoustics and refreshing airflow that comes from an unknown source outside. Visitors can take an hour-long tour that will take them 600 meters underground. If you're feeling more adventurous, there is also a crystal tour that takes you 2000 meters into the cave, where you can see a chamber filled with sparkling aragonite crystals.

Sudwala Dinosaur Park |
|
The Sudwala Dinosaur Park is located right next to the Sudwala Caves. In the museum, you can see life-size models of ancient creatures, such as amphibious reptiles, dinosaurs, ancient mammals, and even prehistoric humans. These models were sculpted by an artist named Jan van Zijl, who also designed the black wildebeest on the old South African two-cent coin. The park also has real Nile Crocodiles, which are very similar to their ancient relatives but also perfectly adapted for survival. The park is surrounded by a beautiful forest garden with lots of trees and plants. Visitors might see monkeys and red-breasted cuckoos there. A new addition to the park is a stunning viewing deck that allows visitors to admire the Rainforest Valley, a designated National Heritage Site.
