Our beautiful Resort and seaside town share a name derived from the Vungu River, inspired by the Zulu word that captures the soothing sound of a waterfall or the gentle whisper of wind in a gorge. The River's most captivating feature is its breathtaking waterfall, cascading 23 meters into a magnificent lagoon, creating one of the deepest lagoons in the entire country! It forms part of the 1200 km2 Protea Bank Marine Protected Area; a sanctuary that harbours astonishing species yet to be discovered by science, including a rich variety of fish, corals, and comb jellies. It is also the only place on Earth where a large number of giant guitar sharks have been seen.
Alongside the river, is a footpath that leads to the Uvongo River Nature Reserve, an oasis brimming with natural wonders. Here, you will encounter many rare and extraordinary sightings including the buff-spotted flufftail, the dazzling purple-banded sunbird, and the delightful grey waxbill. The nature reserve is truly a paradise for bird-lovers, offering remarkable sightings of the magnificent African crowned eagle, African fish-eagle, Narina trogon, and yellow-bellied greenbul.
